Recently, Cape Town Port in South Africa has experienced severe congestion, exacerbated by ongoing adverse weather conditions. Maersk (MSK) has issued a notice warning of 8-10 day delays at the port due to strong winds, which are expected to cause a backlog of vessels.
Key Updates from Maersk
Vessel Schedule Changes:
The Maersk Chennai 508E will skip Cape Town to avoid delays. Cargo originally scheduled for this vessel will be transferred to the Maersk Cubango 510E.
The One Responsibility, operated jointly by Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd (HPL), and Ocean Network Express (ONE) on the Europe-South Africa (SAECS) route, will bypass Cape Town and sail directly from Durban to Europe.
Port Congestion Data:
From March 3-9, Cape Town Port handled 18,195 TEUs.
The South African Association of ÐßÐßÊÓƵs (SAAFF) predicts a 19% drop in throughput to 14,793 TEUs for March 10-16 due to congestion.
Recommendations for Shippers and ÐßÐßÊÓƵs
Track Shipments Closely: Monitor cargo status to mitigate potential delays.
Plan Ahead: Consider alternative routes or vessels to avoid disruptions.
