Hapag-Lloyd has announced an increase in FAK (Freight All Kinds) rates between the Far East and Northern Europe, effective April 1, 2025. The rate adjustment applies to 20' and 40' dry containers, including high cubes and reefers. The new rates will include MFR (Marine Fuel Recovery) and PSS (Peak Season Surcharge).
Recent Rate Adjustments by Major Carriers
Maersk: Increased FAK rates from the Far East to the Mediterranean, effective March 31, 2025. Additionally, Maersk will implement an Operational Cost Increase (OCI) surcharge for all containers from the Far East to West Africa, effective April 15, 2025.
MSC: Introduced new FAK rates from Far East ports (including Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia) to Northern Europe, effective April 1, 2025.
Market Context
Geopolitical Tensions: Recent announcements by the Houthi rebels to resume attacks on Israeli vessels could further disrupt shipping routes, supporting carriers’ efforts to maintain or increase rates.
Seasonal Demand: With the traditional peak season approaching in Q2, a combination of rising cargo volumes and capacity management could trigger a shift from a low to a high season. However, the market faces potential downward pressure if post-April capacity releases outpace demand.
