According to the Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration, at approximately 19:55 on October 25, the Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center received a report stating that:
A bulk carrier, en route from Guangzhou to Shanghai, collided with an inbound container ship near the Mayoushi Light Vessel in the Lingding Waterway and sank afterward.
The Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center immediately coordinated relevant departments and ships to conduct emergency search operations in the accident area and organized on-site traffic control.
As of 16:00 on October 26, 13 out of 15 crew members who fell into the water have been rescued, and 2 remain missing. The on-site search and rescue work is still in full swing.
It is reported that the involved vessels are the container ship "WAN HAI A17" owned by Wan Hai Lines and the bulk carrier "Hai Li 5" belonging to Nanjing Haili Shipping Co., Ltd.
The container ship "WAN HAI A17" is deployed on the Asia-Middle East route. It is an ultra-large container ship delivered by South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje Shipyard to Wan Hai Lines in August 2024.
With an overall length of 335 meters, a width of 51 meters, a deadweight tonnage of 144,572 tons, and a maximum loading capacity of 13,100 TEUs, the vessel was executing the Ningbo-Nansha voyage when the accident occurred. It was hit by the oncoming "Hai Li 5" (which had lost power and was out of control) while entering the port.
The bow of "WAN HAI A17" was damaged, while "Hai Li 5" sank due to severe damage.
